About Tom Whiting Models and Prototyping

TW Modelmaking and Prototyping is a small enterprise with a big ambition. We exist to occupy the space that so many of the larger product development companies overlook, by supporting fellow small to medium sized businesses. This philosophy extends to the UK-based suppliers that I work with in sourcing all my tools and materials.

My own maker career began in 2001 at a start-up product development company. Gemini Prototyping was, at that time, simply four Model Makers working from a garden shed. I was fresh out of college with a HND in Modelmaking, a passion for creativity and an eye for small details. From these simple beginnings I spent the next twenty two years building a professional portfolio of working on million pound contracts for the likes of Unilever, Land Rover/Jaguar, Lego and GHD. This included two years at Proctor and Gamble’s R&D Headquarters reimagining innovative consumer product packaging. And a further seven years leading the model making side of the business for the Cambridge Design Partnership.

Following a relocation to the New Forest, Hampshire, I decided to return to my roots by setting up as a freelance Model Maker in product development and prototyping.

Working from my own modest but highly capable workshop, I have an extensive knowledge of different materials, tools, and techniques and a reputation for polished practical skills with a focus on producing quality. My client base as a freelance maker has been built mostly from my professional network and word-of-mouth recommendations, and includes enterprises such as Swytch Bike, MicrofluidX, GMAX (Equine) Ltd and Skarper E-Bikes. As a partner in their R&D aspirations, I’ve contributed my expertise in refining each product’s functionality and aesthetics, offering solutions as the making process unfolds.
